I have a formal portrait of a family that might be from the 1870’s-’80’s. We are sure they’re relatives but don’t know who they are! “T. Wilson Ashton-under-Lyne” is printed on the frame. We also have tintypes from the same era, same problem. Is there an archive anywhere that might help us identify the people, the year, anything?

Richard Roberts Willson was at WAlworth Road, S E London from -1884-1895-, according to Pritchard’s Directory of London photographers. He gives the address as 11 Walworth Rd, not 116. R R W was at 48 Penrose Street S E London from 1878-1883-. Hope this helps.

  3. I found a card labeled R. Roberts Willson 116 Walworth Road London SE established 1865. I don’t know if that helps you update your records. I’m posting the card on my site for May 23 if you are interested.

Hi Wanda, I’ve posted the info on ‘Watch the Birdie ‘ for Richard Roberts Willson. So glad you like the site. Loved the photos of you ladies in hoop skirts. Looked a lot of fun. Chris Hibbert (‘Watch the Birdie’ blog)

Mr Whitham was a photographer at Hollingworth Lake which is not in Middlesex but at Littleborough, Lancashire. Dates unknown but he is advertised as working in an 1872 guide.

Karen, many thanks for that, I’ve amended Mr Whitham’s entry. Always nice to know that eagle-eyed ‘visitors’ are there to help out when necessary. So many English placenames have ‘twins’ – it’s sometimes difficult to decide which one is being referred to.
